assisted living

Assisted living facilities are growing rapidly, both because they offer an attractive option to seniors seeking assistance while maintaining independence, and because of the costs associated with traditional long-term-care institutions.

Assisted living is a type of housing designed for people who need various levels of medical and personal care. Living spaces can be individual rooms, apartments, or shared quarters. These facilities are a residential long-term care setting where personal care, oversight and other supportive services are provided to or coordinated for residents.

These services are designed to meet the residents' regularly scheduled needs, as determined through an assessment and care planning process, and their unscheduled needs, which may arise at any time.

Assisted living facilities are meeting the needs of millions of seniors who cannot make it entirely on their own, but who do not need nursing care. The community is designed to respond to the needs of individuals who need assistance with activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing, and grooming, but who do not need 24-hour skilled nursing care.

Residents are allowed to age-in-place so that their caregivers and surroundings remain constant. Residents of assisted living facilities need not be concerned with daily meal preparation, because a central kitchen and dining facility typically provides three meals each day. The central dining facility also allows for visiting with others without having to leave home.
